Controller / Director of Finance (Contract)

$120,000 - $140,000

A growing commercial construction company is seeking an experienced Controller / Director of Finance to lead accounting, financial reporting, forecasting, cash flow management, banking relationships, and strategic finance initiatives. This is a hands-on leadership role for a construction finance professional who can drive both day-to-day accounting operations and high-level financial decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting and financial operations, including month-end close, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and cash flow management.
  • Oversee construction accounting functions, including job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, backlog reporting, and project profitability analysis.
  • Own budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and performance reporting.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external CPA firms, banking partners, and lenders.
  • Support financing initiatives, lender reporting, cash flow analysis, and banking relationships.
  • Maintain and enhance forecasting models, profitability reporting, and financial analysis tools.
  • Lead ERP initiatives, including a planned migration to Sage Intacct.
  • Partner with executive leadership to provide financial insights and support strategic business decisions.
  • Establish scalable processes, controls, and reporting practices to support continued growth and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of Controller, Construction Controller, Director of Finance, Director of Accounting, or CFO experience within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, WIP schedules, revenue recognition, forecasting, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Experience managing the full accounting function and working directly with CPA firms, auditors, banks, and lending partners.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Experience leading ERP implementations, upgrades, or system conversions.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and/or Deltek strongly preferred.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Ability to operate as both a strategic finance leader and hands-on contributor.
